Backpacking/Camping?
In you opinion what is the best order to pack your backpack before heading on a hike?
and Is it common to attach items to the outside of your pack (cookware etc...) ?
I always load in relation to when I'm going to need certain items. For example I know that my sleeping bag is the last thing that I'll need so that stays on the bottom. I know that I'll need my tent before I need the bag so the tent is loaded on top of the bag etc... As far as weight distribution is concerned, I try to keep the heavier items loaded closer to my back and the lighter items further out. This helps my center of gravity. Generally the rule is to try and keep 50% of the weight in the top third of the pack. Although if I know I'll be going through some steep terrain, I will try to keep heavier items lower down in the pack.
As far as attaching things to the outside of the pack, you can do it but you run a risk of damaging things. Additionally things tend to make a lot of noise when attached to the outside of the pack... it's rude, nobody wants to hear someone clanking through the woods.
